"Strawberry Hospital is memorable in just how authentically it communicates the inner conflicts of its author. This friction is predominantly built around frustration over gender identity at a young age, a taxing quest of soul-searching that corkscrews through many phases of traumatic depression right to the brink of self-harm and possibly even beyond. This project doesn't sound like an amateur production by a long shot. A wide margin of half-dozen formulations are made up of powerful gushes of shoegaze guitar that have been lathered in hardcore punk sensibilities and lucid semblances of atmospheric metal. An equally ubiquitous faux-cheery set of trance synths are reminiscent of a forced smile that withers away back into a resting glumness when left alone, and these mewling electronic keys take direct inspiration from the video game soundtracks cited in the musician's own descriptions of this debut album. Touches of screamo vocals, awash with bleached blotches of noise, break loose the chains completely, raging at the unfairness of life with the everlasting question of who they are supposed to be.
